Annotation.

Keywords: localization mechanism, spatial (locative) reference point, static / directivity / transitivity, symmetric / asymmetric spatial conceptualization, real / irreal (metonymic) spatial conceptualization.

LOCATIVE REFERENCE POINT AS A MARKER OF SPATIAL CONCEPTUALIZATION

Abstract

Background: The locativity category has philosophical and linguistic interpretations. Linguistics regards locativity as a category encompassing the entire spectrum of spatial meanings represented by such main variations as static, dynamics, transitivity.  The category under consideration has been reflected on the sentence level of the structural submodel Sub + Praed + Adv loc with its attached invariant semantics ‘carrier of procedural characteristic + procedural characteristic + spatial boundaries of procedural characteristic’. Formation of differential meanings as specific representatives of invariant content plane is done through all constituent positions – subject, predicate, and near-predicate. The complex locative mechanism is reflected by sentences with the following denotative situations: ‘somebody (something) is residing somewhere’, ‘something (somebody) is heading somewhere with registering spatial coordinates – start, finish, both start and finish simultaneously’, ‘something (somebody) is heading somewhere without registering spatial coordinates’. Locative conceptualization mechanism is complex, with its important marker being a locative reference point related to the real roundabouts of somebody or something.

Purpose: The primary aim of this study is to ascertain the role of the right-side extender (Adv loc) in the mechanism of spatial conceptualization, and to determine typology of locative reference points, and specificity of their verbalization.

Results: the paper has identified the typology of locative reference points which, similarly to space in general, represent the world in all its diversity, appear as real objects with their correspondent parametric characteristics, or as imaginary objects with indifferent characteristics. The author has specified the following forms of locative reference point conceptualization: symmetry / asymmetry, reality / irreality (metonymy).

Discussion: there exist different criteria for locative reference point identification. The most important ones are: 1) semantic content of the near-predicate component of sentences of the structural model Sub + Praed + Adv loc and 2) mechanism of localization which is a logical operation of correlating the procedural characteristic bearer (a representative of Sub position) with the spatial reference point (a representative of Adv loc position).  The near-predicate position can be occupied by noun word-forms, preposition-case forms, adverbs capable of creating isofunctional relations. Each of the specified locative reference points has its own linguistic representation, which may or may not provide for lexical and semantic selectivity. The above-mentioned selectivity mainly refers to the locative symmetry. A symmetric locative reference point programs a situation in which a substance at Sub position resides in its own system of locative coordinates, while an asymmetric reference point is in the situation ‘someone (something) is located somewhere’, ‘someone (something) is moving somewhere’, ‘somebody (something) is coming from somewhere’. A real locative reference point is directly connected with the main characteristics of space (three-, two-dimensionality, homogeneity, isotropy), for an irreal spatial reference point those are indifferent.

Keywords: localization mechanism, spatial (locative) reference point, static / directivity / transitivity, symmetric / asymmetric spatial conceptualization, real / irreal (metonymic) spatial conceptualization.
